Papercup is one of Glasgow’s most loved coffee shops with them also having shops in Motherwell and Clarkston.
The original shop opened on Great Western Road in Glasgow’s West End in 2012 between Kelvinbridge and Hillhead, so we headed down to Papercup to hear about the success of the business as speak to Head of Coffee, David Deans.
Tell me a but about the history of Papercup and how it came about.
“Papercup’s been going around for 14 years. I’ve been with it for 11 years. It was kind of brought together to be a place where you could come and get that kind of Australian style speciality coffee and brunch, but mostly without the pretentiousness.
“To make it really accessible, make it really fun, and that’s what we’ve continued to do for, I suppose the past 11 years that I’ve been here, and longer.”
Why was Great Western Road the right place to open Papercup in Glasgow and what is this area like?
“This was our very first unit. This kind of area was, as you said, a bit of a no man’s land, and it’s taken all the businesses that are along here. Businesses like ourselves, Achilles Heel, the hardware shop, and others, and knowing each other all this amount of time and, staying friends.
“As we spoke about with kind of the problems we’ve had on the roads, and the pavements, and the buildings, and things, we’ve been able to get through that together.
“We see each other every day, even the customers that come in, we know the family, know the dogs, know the kids. I’ve seen so many kids grow up in this length of time.”
