Barge at The Shore in Leith could become new restaurant with waterside terrace
A barge moored at The Shore in Leith could be transformed into a new floating bar and restaurant under plans submitted to the City of Edinburgh Council.
The proposals would see Barge 1502U, currently used as office space, converted into a hospitality venue with indoor and outdoor dining.
Plans include the construction of a new cantilevered deck on the vessel to create an alfresco dining area overlooking the Water of Leith.
Additional outdoor seating would also be provided on the quayside beside the barge.
The vessel occupies a prominent position at The Shore, close to the concentration of restaurants, bars and cafés that have made the waterfront one of Edinburgh’s best-known dining districts.
The planning application seeks permission for a change of use from offices to a bar and restaurant as well as the associated alterations to the barge.
Documents submitted with the application show how the proposed deck would extend from the vessel, providing space for tables immediately above the water.
The project would create an unusual addition to The Shore, where the area’s maritime heritage remains visible alongside the restaurants and converted former warehouses lining the waterfront.
The barge was transformed by interior design studio Suface-id in 2008. 1502U was a former lighter barge owned by the Ministry of Defence. Crucially, and was used to deliver fuel to the Falklands. Following conversion it provides 3,000 sq ft of accommodation over two levels, berthed outside the Malmaison on The Shore hotel. It is currently the base for an advertising agency.
Leith has undergone significant regeneration in recent decades, with The Shore becoming an established destination for food and drink.
The application remains awaiting assessment and a decision has yet to be made.
