Cult London restaurant Whyte’s is returning to Glasgow for a one-night takeover as part of its international food tour.

Chef Whyte Rushen and restaurateur Livi Akers will take over the kitchen at Next Door in Strathbungo on Thursday 5 November.

The pair are returning to the city after staging a Glasgow event last year, with a new menu created specifically for the Southside restaurant and cocktail bar.

Whyte’s has travelled to 35 cities and staged more than 55 events over the past 18 months, creating different menus inspired by the food and ingredients of each destination.

Rushen has serious restaurant pedigree. Before establishing Whyte’s, he worked in kitchens including Brat, Scully St James and Kerridge’s and developed a following through a series of unconventional London pop-ups. His early dishes included his much talked-about smash burgers and oysters topped with pickled onion Monster Munch.

Rushen and Akers opened the first permanent Whyte’s restaurant in Hackney in late 2023.

The small London Fields restaurant quickly attracted attention. Time Out gave it five stars and included it among its best new restaurants in London, praising an ever-changing approach which could move from oysters to Basque-inspired cooking from one menu to the next.

The pair chose to close the Hackney site after 15 months and took Whyte’s on the road.

The tour has since included stops in Tokyo, Bangkok, Bali, Shanghai, Seoul, New York, Mexico City, Lisbon, Athens, Rotterdam and Philadelphia, with Rushen and Akers working with restaurants and chefs in each city.

For Glasgow, Scottish ingredients will feature heavily in an idiosyncratic menu featuring unexpected combinations.

The menu includes caramelised swede and haggis croquettes with whisky peppercorn sauce, roasted Orkney scallop with white pudding, confit leek and parsnip, and grilled langoustines with house Lorne sausage and lentil butter curry.

A selection of cocktails has also been created for the event.

The choice of venue brings together the travelling London restaurant with one of the newest additions to Glasgow’s Southside food and drink scene. Next Door opened on Pollokshaws Road in July in the former Marchtown premises.

It was created by the team behind Corner Shop in Yorkhill, which became one of Glasgow’s most talked-about restaurant openings after launching in 2025.

Corner Shop was established by Conor McGeady, Matthew Mustard and Gary McKernan. McGeady previously worked at Glasgow restaurants including The Gannet, Brett and Fallachan, while the restaurant’s kitchen is led by chef Alex Brady.

Next Door was conceived as a neighbourhood cocktail bar and kitchen, combining cocktails, vinyl and a menu of small plates. Its food has included dishes such as soft crab omelette, beef tartare with soy-cured egg yolk and chicken salt tofu cracker, and prawn cocktail.

The venue occupies a corner site at 741 Pollokshaws Road, close to Queen’s Park, in a stretch of Strathbungo that has developed into one of Glasgow’s busiest independent food and drink areas.

The Whyte’s collaboration will run for one night only before the travelling restaurant continues its Scottish run with planned events in Dundee and Edinburgh.
