Scotland is set to be battered by gale-force winds and torrential rain as its second named storm blows in along with the country’s first flurry of snow.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind covering the whole of the country.

Winds associated with Storm Boelo are to be “the most concerning part”, according to STV Weather.

Storm Boelo will also bring snow to higher ground with Glenshee Ski Centre and Cairngorms Mountain Resort already seeing the first hint of winter as they recorded their first snowfall today.

Storm Boelo arrives early on Saturday morning, pushing into western Scotland and persisting throughout the weekend.

The Met Office has warned of injuries and danger from flying debris as Storm Boelo is to batter Scotland with strong winds from Saturday.

A yellow warning comes into force at 6pm and remains until 9pm on Sunday.

Scotland’s first named storm, Storm Austen, hits the UK this Friday and is forecast to bring gusts of 50-60mph to southern areas, with 70mph possible along exposed coasts.

STV News meteorologist Sean Batty says that while the worst of the winds from Storm Austen won’t hit Scotland, heavy rain is forecast.

A yellow weather warning is in place for much of the country from 6am on Friday until midnight.

People are being warned that there is a small chance homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings and disruption is also expected on rail, road, ferry and air transport services, with some communities at risk of being cut off by flooded roads.

An area of heavy rain will develop across southern and central areas of Scotland before dawn Friday in association with Storm Austen, extending over northeast Scotland during the morning and early afternoon.

Accumulations of 20-40 mm are expected widely within the warning area through this period, with 60-80 mm possible in some locations.

STV weather presenter Philip Petrie said: “It looks set to bring heavy bursts of rain, particularly over higher ground, with further heavy showers and rain constantly wrapping around the centre of the storm and moving west to east across the country.

“We currently have a yellow weather warning covering the whole of Scotland from 6pm Saturday until 9pm Sunday where widely we could see gusts of 55-60mph and some higher ground areas and coastal parts seeing gusts of 80mph.

“Storm Boelo will move away finally overnight Sunday into Monday when we start to see the winds easing and dying out.”
