Edinburgh vegetarian restaurant Hendersons gets started at new Glasgow location
Hendersons, the Edinburgh vegetarian and vegan restaurant founded in 1962, has opened its first Glasgow site on Pollokshaws Road, its first venue outside the capital in more than 60 years of trading.
The family business, owned by Barrie Henderson, has taken over the former Seven21 site on the Southside. Newly appointed executive chef Anna Czapiewska will oversee the kitchens in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Originally from Poland, Czapiewska is known for a creative approach to vegetarian and vegan cooking that uses seasonal Scottish produce featuring fermentation and foraging.
The Glasgow menu combines long-standing Hendersons dishes with new seasonal plates, some based on original recipes from founder Janet Henderson, Barrie’s grandmother, who was born and raised in the city.
The venue carries has upstairs dining room seating up to 29, a bar area and a lower ground floor space for up to 18 guests.
Czapiewska said, “We’ve built a really talented team in Glasgow who are genuinely excited to bring Hendersons to the city. Everyone has bought into what we’re trying to achieve, creating thoughtful, creative vegetarian and vegan food that’s full of flavour while giving people a warm and relaxed experience.
“Hendersons has an incredible history, but we’re also showing people just how exciting modern plant-based cooking can be. Whether someone eats vegetarian food every day or is trying it for the first time, we want them to leave feeling inspired.”
Barrie Henderson said, “Walking through the finished restaurant has made everything feel very real. My gran, who started Hendersons over 60 years ago, was from Glasgow, so bringing the business back to her home city feels incredibly special.
“We’ve been made so welcome by the local community already and can’t wait to finally open the doors. Hendersons has always been about great food and sustainability, as well as making everyone feel welcome, and it feels like the perfect place to start this next chapter.”
The expansion follows the revival of Hendersons in Edinburgh after the closure of the original restaurant in 2020.
Barrie had been working in the business since he was 14 and revived Hendersons at a new location near Edinburgh’s Bruntsfield Links.
Hendersons opened in Edinburgh in 1962, initially as an outlet for the organic produce grown at Janet and Mac Henderson’s East Lothian farm, it expanded to a bistro bar and the popular Salad Table restaurant.
