Edinburgh drivers can still save several pounds on a tank of petrol by shopping around as fuel prices continue to climb across the UK.

The latest government-backed Fuel Finder data shows a difference of around 15p a litre between the cheapest and most expensive petrol currently being reported at filling stations across the Edinburgh area.

ScottishNews.com checked prices on Monday 28 September, using data submitted by retailers to the UK Government’s Fuel Finder scheme.

The cheapest reported unleaded petrol was at Costco Wholesale Edinburgh, where E10 was 162.9p per litre. The price was last reported by the Costkea Way forecourt at 4.04pm on Saturday. Costco fuel prices are for members.

For motorists without a Costco membership, two Tesco filling stations were the cheapest options.

Tesco’s Colinton Superstore was reporting unleaded at 165.9p per litre, with the same price at the Tesco Corstorphine Extra filling station on Meadow Place Road. Both prices were reported to Fuel Finder on Friday 25 September.

Asda Chesser was next at 168.7p per litre. That figure is particularly current, having been reported by the supermarket at 3.02pm on Monday – less than 20 minutes before the latest data was collected. Diesel at Chesser was 187.7p.

Three Sainsbury’s forecourts followed at 168.9p per litre: Currie, Longstone and Murrayfield. Their latest reported diesel price was 187.9p per litre.

The ten cheapest reported E10 petrol prices in Edinburgh at 3.20pm were:

The same Fuel Finder snapshot put the average unleaded price across 30 reporting Edinburgh filling stations at 171.9p per litre. The most expensive petrol among those stations was 177.9p, meaning the difference between the cheapest and highest reported prices was 15p a litre.

Prices are rising rapidly across the country. RAC figures published on Monday put the UK average for unleaded at 174.13p per litre, more than 11p higher than at the beginning of September.

Diesel has climbed even more sharply and reached a UK record of 199.18p per litre on Monday, exceeding the previous record of 199.09p set in June 2022. The RAC said a 55-litre petrol fill now costs almost £96 nationally, while the equivalent diesel fill is approaching £110.

Fuel Finder was introduced nationally this year and requires petrol stations to report changes in their prices within 30 minutes. The government says the system is designed to give motorists access to more accurate and timely information about local fuel costs.
