Ewan McGregor reveals his favourite motorbike route through Scotland

Ewan McGregor has revealed his favourite motorbike ride in Scotland – a spectacular route through Glencoe and Perthshire that ends with a cup of tea at his parents’ house.

The actor, who has travelled thousands of miles around the world on two wheels, described the Scottish journey in a new film for Indian Motorcycle.

McGregor, who grew up in Crieff, said his favourite ride now takes him through some of the country’s best-known scenery before eventually bringing him back to the Perthshire town where his parents live.

The route takes in Glencoe before heading alongside Loch Earn and towards Loch Tay.

From there, McGregor rides along the northern side of Loch Tay, with elevated views across the water, before reaching Kenmore.

The journey then continues through the Sma’ Glen, an area close to where the Trainspotting and Star Wars actor grew up.

McGregor described the landscape there as: “It’s spectacularly beautiful. It’s not quite the Highlands, but it’s got that Highland feeling to it.”

He said the changing scale of the landscape and its colours throughout the year make it one of his favourite parts of the journey.

The route eventually brings him back towards Crieff, allowing him to visit his mother Carol and father Jim.

The actor has spent much of his adult life living away from Scotland but has now moved back, making the ride to see his parents possible whenever he is at home.

McGregor also spoke about how riding a motorbike helps him switch off.

He said that when he has a day without plans he can find himself beginning several different things without finishing them. Once he gets on a bike, he said, those distractions disappear.

His fascination with motorcycles began when he was around seven or eight.

McGregor recalled being taken by his father to see a young boy whose wish was to ride a motorcycle. Afterwards, McGregor was offered the chance to try the small Honda himself.

The experience began a lifelong passion which has since taken him across the world.

McGregor and fellow actor Charley Boorman became synonymous with motorcycle travel after their 2004 television series Long Way Round, which followed them from London to New York through Europe, Asia and North America.

They later travelled from John O’Groats to Cape Town for Long Way Down and from South America to Los Angeles for Long Way Up.

The pair returned for Long Way Home, released in 2025, travelling from McGregor’s home in Scotland through Europe before finishing at Boorman’s home in England.

His favourite Scottish bike ride takes in some of the country’s most spectacular countryside before finishing back in the part of Perthshire where his love of motorcycles began.
