Scotland’s iconic Falkirk Wheel will be transformed by light, lasers and water this September weekend with the launch of an immersive new after-dark experience.
The spectacular evening experience, from illumin8, will celebrate 25 years since the ambitious Millennium Link project helped breathe new life into Scotland’s Lowland canals, including the Forth & Clyde Canal that flows through Glasgow.
The event marks 25 years of the Millennium Link project, the major restoration which reopened the Forth & Clyde and Union canals and reconnected Scotland’s canal network across the Central Belt.
A quarter of a century later, illumin8 will celebrate that legacy by inviting visitors to experience The Falkirk Wheel as they have never seen it before.
This September weekend (September 26-27), the site will become an immersive world of colour, light, music and discovery, with a spectacular water and laser show, illuminated trails, hidden routes, installations and surprises to discover along the way.
At the heart of illumin8, the basin of The Falkirk Wheel will become the stage for a captivating water, light and laser spectacular, using the dramatic backdrop of the Wheel to create an experience never before seen at the landmark.
Visitors will also be able to explore the site after dark, following an enhanced light trek through the landscape and discovering installations and illuminated spaces along the way, offering a completely different way to experience one of Scotland’s most recognisable landmarks.
Inside the Visitor Centre, the celebrations will turn back the clock with a 2000s inspired Silent Disco complete with noughties pop and RnB music as a nod to the iconic era in which The Falkirk Wheel and Millennium Link transformed Scotland’s canal network.
Complete with disco balls, atmospheric effects and some of the decade’s biggest hits, visitors can grab their headphones and relive the music of Britney, Beyoncé, Busted, the Black Eyed Peas and more.
Hot food, drinks and sweet treats will be available throughout the evening, while firepits on the plaza will give visitors somewhere to warm up, grab something to eat and take in views of the show.
A range of additional activities will also be available, including glow-in-the-dark mini-golf and guided e-boat tours.
Designed for families, groups of friends, couples and adventurers of all ages, illumin8 combines exploration, light and entertainment to create an autumn night out with a difference.

“The Falkirk Wheel is spectacular at any time, but seeing it illuminated against the night sky above a water show in our basin is something completely different.
“We wanted to create an experience that gives people the chance to rediscover the Wheel and the landscape around it in a completely new way. From the water and light show to the illuminated trails, food, fire and silent disco, there’s something to discover around every corner.
