Filming for second series of Rebus takes place in Edinburgh and Glasgow
Filming continues in Edinburgh and Glasgow for the second series of hit Scottish crime drama Rebus. Most recently film crews were spotted on Glasgow’s Great Western Road with scenes taking place in Brett restaurant.
Richard Rankin has returned to the role of Detective John Rebus as production takes place on six new episodes of the BBC series.
The drama, based on the bestselling novels by Sir Ian Rankin, will film in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow over the coming months before returning to BBC iPlayer, BBC One and BBC Scotland in 2027.
The first series introduced a new version of the famous Edinburgh detective, with Outlander star Richard Rankin playing Rebus as a younger officer dealing with violent crime, family problems and the darker side of the capital.
It proved a major success for the BBC. The opening episode reached 6.3 million viewers across all platforms, while the programme went on to win three RTS Scotland awards – for Best Drama, Writer and Director.
A host of Scottish actors have now joined the cast for the second series. John Michie, known for his roles in Taggart and Ridley, and Stephen McCole, whose credits include Shetland and Vigil, are among the new additions.
They are joined by Emily Barber, Lorne MacFadyen, Conor Berry, Ivan Ivashkin, Olga Safronova, Douglas Russell, Alexis Rodney, Reece Montague and Joshua Haynes.
Brian Ferguson is back as Rebus’s brother Michael, with Lucie Shorthouse returning as DC Siobhan Clarke and Amy Manson as Rebus’s former wife Rhona Moncrieffe.
Stuart Bowman will again play Edinburgh gangster Ger Cafferty, while Noof Ousellam returns as Darryl Christie and Thoren Ferguson as Malcolm Fox.
Richard Rankin said there was a “real sense of excitement” about returning to the character and working again with the team behind the first series.
He described Rebus as a “richly complex character” who is “fiercely driven, deeply flawed, endlessly determined and often at war with himself”, adding that there were still many layers of the detective left to explore.
The second series will once again be written by Scottish playwright Gregory Burke.
The new story will explore the relationship between violent crime and the apparently respectable world of law and finance, taking Rebus into territory where the boundaries between Edinburgh’s criminal underworld and professional establishment begin to blur.
The new episodes will continue the latest screen incarnation of one of Scotland’s most famous fictional detectives.
Rebus first appeared in Ian Rankin’s 1987 novel Knots and Crosses and has become synonymous with Edinburgh, with the city’s streets, pubs and darker corners forming an important backdrop to the books.
