Plans have been submitted for a new Tesco supermarket and petrol station on Skye.
The joint proposal between WEST Ranga Skye Limited and Lochalsh & Skye Housing Association would see Tesco’s first retail store on the island and bring multi-million-pound investment to the local area.
The project in Portree is expected to create 100 jobs locally.
The site will comprise a 32,356 sq. ft supermarket with petrol station, service yard and customer car parking on approximately 4.8 acres. And the new store will have a dedicated grocery home shopping facility with vans able to deliver to properties across Skye.
It is proposed construction on the development will begin in the summer of 2027 with a projected opening date at the end of 2028, subject to planning permission.
Alastair Dickie, director of West Ranga Skye Ltd, said: “We are pleased to have been working with Highland Council through the pre-application process. We are now excited to submit a detailed planning application for the Tesco development and hope to bring a much-anticipated new store and petrol station to the Isle of Skye. Under the current timescales, we hope to be on site in summer 2027, with a projected store opening near the end 2028, if planning permission is granted.”
Matthew Price, acquisitions director at Tesco, added: “We are excited about the potential to open the first Tesco store and petrol station in the Isle of Skye, as we currently only serve the local community through our online grocery home shopping business. We look forward to the opportunity to provide great value and choice for residents and visitors in the Isle of Skye and surrounding islands and villages, in a central and well accessed location.”
Councillor John Finlayson commented: “I am pleased that all necessary pre-application issues have now been agreed with Highland Council, and a detailed application is now being submitted for the first Tesco store here on Skye. Clearly with over a million tourists visiting Skye & Raasay each year and local, residents also looking for increased choice in terms of what they can buy, as was evidenced in the survey that took place in 2025, the addition of a new store which will provide more variety will be welcomed by many people and will also support the concerns previously expressed about the stocking pressures sometimes placed on existing retailers on the island.”
