Barack Obama arrived in Glasgow ahead of a major appearance at the OVO Hydro tonight.

The former US president landed at Glasgow Airport at around 3pm on Wednesday (14 October), where a police escort was in place as his motorcade left the airport.

Obama travelled into the city in a convoy of vehicles before arriving at the five-star Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel in Glasgow city centre, where he is staying during his visit to Scotland.

The 65-year-old was dressed casually in a black bomber jacket bearing the number 44 – a reference to his place as the 44th President of the United States.

Kimpton Blythswood Square occupies the former Royal Scottish Automobile Club building overlooking the private gardens at Blythswood Square and is the only Glasgow hotel with AA five-star accreditation.

Obama is in Glasgow for An Evening with President Barack Obama at the OVO Hydro, which is due to begin at 8pm.

He will be joined on stage by journalist and author Sathnam Sanghera for a conversation about America, international politics and the challenges facing the world.

The Glasgow appearance is the second stop on a three-city visit to the UK and Ireland.

Obama was in Belfast on Tuesday, where he received an honorary doctorate from Queen’s University Belfast and spoke about Northern Ireland’s transformation since the Good Friday Agreement.

He told an audience at the university that peace could not be taken for granted and challenged younger generations to continue building a more peaceful and inclusive society.

It is his first visit to Scotland since COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, when the former president addressed the UN climate conference and met young climate campaigners.

Obama served two terms in the White House between 2009 and 2017 after becoming the first Black president of the United States.
