There’s something unsettling about walking through a forest after dark – but add creepy characters, unexpected scares and an eerie atmosphere, and even the most confident visitor might think twice about what lies around the next corner.

That was exactly what awaited me at Kelburn’s Haunted Forest, where Halloween thrills take over the grounds of Kelburn Estate in Ayrshire.

Arriving after nightfall, the atmosphere was enough to put me on edge before the experience had even begun. With darkness surrounding the trail, every sound seemed amplified, and it was impossible to know what might be lurking ahead.

As I made my way through the forest, I quickly realised this was not simply a case of following a path through the trees. The experience was designed to keep visitors guessing, with creepy encounters and unexpected moments making it difficult to relax.

Just when I thought I had made it through one section unscathed, there was always the possibility of something waiting around the next bend.

The combination of the natural woodland setting and the carefully created Halloween atmosphere made the experience particularly immersive. Unlike a traditional haunted attraction, the forest itself became part of the scare, with the darkness adding another layer of suspense.

But my stay at Kelburn Estate did not end when I made it out of the woods.

I also spent the night in the Kelburn Yurts, offering a different side to the experience and the chance to make a proper getaway out of my Halloween adventure.

After an evening of scares, settling in for the night was a welcome change of pace. Staying on the estate meant the trip was about more than just the haunted trail, turning it into an overnight escape in the Ayrshire countryside.

For anyone looking for something a little different this Halloween, combining the Haunted Forest with an overnight stay offers the opportunity to make an occasion of it, rather than simply heading home once the scares are over.

Kelburn’s Halloween offering brings together the thrill of exploring the woods after dark with the chance to stay amid the surrounding countryside.

And while the forest certainly provides the adrenaline rush, having somewhere to retreat to afterwards is an appealing prospect.
