Firefighters are continuing to tackle a major scrapyard fire in Glasgow after crews battled the blaze throughout the night.

Six fire appliances and a high-reach vehicle remained at the scene on South Street in the west of the city on Saturday morning, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service warning it expected to be a “protracted incident”.

Roads around the scene remained closed later on Saturday morning, while thick grey smoke was still visible above the area.

Residents who can see or smell smoke are continuing to be advised to keep their windows and doors closed. Drivers travelling through affected areas have also been told to switch off air conditioning and keep air vents closed.

The fire broke out at a scrapyard in the Scotstoun area of Glasgow late last night.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 11.23pm and initially sent nine fire appliances, two high-reach appliances and specialist resources to the scene. Dramatic footage from the area showed flames and thick smoke rising into the night sky.

People living nearby also reported hearing a series of loud bangs as the blaze developed. Footage recorded by a local resident captured explosive sounds coming from the burning site. There have been no reported casualties.

By 9.40am on Saturday, the emergency response had been scaled down to six appliances and one high-reach vehicle, but firefighters remained at the scene working to make the area safe.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “If you can see or smell smoke, please continue to keep windows and doors closed.

“If you are driving through the area and can see smoke, keep air conditioning off and air vents closed.

“Members of the public should continue to avoid the area as firefighters work to make the area safe.

“This will be a protracted incident, and we are grateful to the local community for their understanding, patience and cooperation during this time.”

At the height of the incident, the fire generated a large number of calls to emergency control rooms as flames and smoke could be seen from surrounding parts of Glasgow.

The fire service asked members of the public not to make further calls about the blaze once crews were in attendance. Police Scotland has also been supporting the emergency response.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. Members of the public are being asked to continue to stay away from the South Street area while emergency crews work at the site.
