One of Sky’s biggest recent crime dramas is moving to Scotland for its second series, with filming due to begin in the country next year. Under Salt Marsh will return for another six episodes, with Rafe Spall reprising his role as Detective Eric Bull.
Season two will leave behind the fictional Welsh community of Morfa Halen that provided the setting for the first story. The Lead detective will move to what Sky describes as a remote Scottish mining village “sinking under the weight of its own secrets”.
A new murder investigation will draw the detective into the community while also bringing him closer to “uncovering the truth about his own past”. Sky confirmed on Wednesday, 26 August that filming for the new series will begin in Scotland in 2027.
The precise location of the fictional mining village, and where producers intend to film it, has not yet been revealed. That could put former mining communities in areas including Fife, the Lothians and Lanarkshire in the spotlight as the production begins scouting and preparing Scottish locations.
The move north follows a successful first series for Under Salt Marsh. The drama launched in January with Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly playing former detective Jackie Ellis and Spall as her estranged former police partner.
The cast also included Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Yang, Harry Lawtey, Brian Gleeson and Kimberley Nixon.
Sky says the programme went on to become its biggest Original drama launch since The Day of the Jackal and its biggest entertainment title of 2026 so far. It attracted a 28-day audience of 2.5 million.
The second series will again be created, written and directed by Claire Oakley, who said she was looking forward to shifting the story to another distinctive part of the UK. She said: “I am thrilled to be taking the series to another unique part of the UK where we explore a gripping mystery and unearth buried secrets.”
Little Door Productions will again make the drama in association with Sky Studios.
Oakley will write the new series alongside In-Sook Chappell, Jonathan Harbottle and Scottish screenwriter and director Scott Graham.
