Hollywood stars descend on Moray as filming begins on Scottish wedding comedy

Hollywood stars including Jeff Daniels, John Cleese, Dominic West and Guy Pearce are heading to the north of Scotland as filming gets under way on a new comedy about a chaotic Scottish wedding.

Crews have moved into the centre of Forres in Moray to shoot scenes for The Reception, directed by filmmaker Trudie Styler.

Activity has been centred around the former St Laurence Church on the town’s High Street, where production vehicles, trailers and equipment have arrived and road restrictions have been introduced.

The historic building is understood to be providing the setting for scenes at the beginning of the film, which follows the fallout after a groom abandons his bride at the altar.

It comes as a string of major names have been confirmed for the film.

Dumb and Dumber and The Newsroom star Jeff Daniels was previously announced in the lead role, with John Cleese, The Crown actor Dominic West and Arrested Development star Portia de Rossi now joining the ensemble.

Australian actor Guy Pearce, whose credits include The Brutalist and LA Confidential, is also in the cast alongside The White Lotus star Sabrina Impacciatore, Rachael Stirling and Crazy Rich Asians actress Selena Tan.

Other cast members include Beverly Hills Cop actor Bronson Pinchot, Call My Agent star Nicolas Maury, Scottish actress Alyth Ross, Eliot Sumner, Will Merrick, Barbara Marten and Daniel Quincy Annoh.

The Reception is set around a lavish wedding at a grand Scottish estate which goes ahead despite the bride and groom being absent.

Felix has abandoned Victoria at the altar, leaving their families and friends to decide what to do with a reception that has already been prepared.

Rather than call the celebrations off, the guests carry on – setting the stage for an increasingly chaotic day involving the two families, wedding guests and staff.

The film was written by Tom Stourton and Tom Palmer and is being directed by Styler, whose previous films include Freak Show and documentary Posso Entrare? An Ode to Naples.

Production is taking place at locations across Scotland, with plans previously revealed to shoot at a castle near Loch Ness as well as the scenes now being filmed in Moray.

In Forres, Moray Council has confirmed road restrictions around the High Street and Gordon Street are connected to filming.

Production activity around St Laurence is expected to continue until Thursday 5 November.

The former Church of Scotland building itself only recently entered a new chapter in its history.

St Laurence Forres Trust bought the church on behalf of the community on 18 March after raising funds including support from the Scottish Land Fund.

The trust plans to develop the landmark as a venue for arts, music, cultural events and community gatherings.

The Reception is being produced by Styler and Celine Rattray through Maven Screen Media alongside Piers Tempest of Tempo Productions.

Filming is continuing in Scotland, with international sales due to be launched by Beta Cinema at the American Film Market this month.

A release date has not yet been announced.
