V&ACatwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show traces more than 100 years of runway history, examining how fashion shows evolved from intimate presentations in private salons into spectacular global events watched by millions.
The exhibition, a UK exclusive at V&A Dundee, brings together original garments, film, photography, stage material and archive objects from some of the world's biggest fashion houses.
Among the designers and brands represented are Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Maison Margiela, Prada, Paco Rabanne, Yves Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood.
The Dundee exhibition also features runway looks by Scottish designers including Pam Hogg, Christopher Kane, Charles Jeffrey and Nicholas Daley, alongside work by Iris van Herpen.
Inside the exhibition
V&AOne of the defining moments explored is Alexander McQueen's celebrated Spring/Summer 1999 No. 13 show, which ended with model Shalom Harlow being sprayed with paint by two robotic arms as she stood on a rotating platform.
Other landmark runway moments include Chanel's Spring/Summer 2015 presentation, staged as a mock feminist protest on a Paris street, and the extraordinary settings fashion houses have increasingly used to turn their collections into global spectacles.
Dior's 2025 cruise show at Drummond Castle Gardens in Perthshire also features in the exhibition's exploration of dramatic fashion-show locations, alongside Fendi's show at the Great Wall of China and Chanel's famous rocket-launch runway production.

V&AThe exhibition explores the changing role of the catwalk from the late 19th century onwards and how music, architecture, lighting, film, hair, make-up and set design have increasingly become integral parts of the fashion show.
Kirsty Hassard, co-curator of Catwalk at V&A Dundee, said fashion shows were "defining moments in culture" which bring together numerous creative disciplines.
She said the exhibition explores the ideas behind some of the most memorable catwalk productions and how fashion shows have influenced both clothing and wider culture.
Catwalk is a collaboration between V&A Dundee and Germany's Vitra Design Museum.
