Hollywood star Jeff Daniels is to lead a new comedy centred around a lavish Scottish wedding that goes spectacularly wrong.
The two-time Emmy winner has signed up to star in The Reception, a new feature film directed by Trudie Styler, with the project unveiled at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The story is set at a grand Scottish estate where guests have gathered for a wedding between Felix and Victoria. There is just one major problem – the bride and groom are missing.
Felix has abandoned Victoria at the altar, leaving their parents, relatives and friends to negotiate an increasingly chaotic reception without the couple they were supposed to be celebrating.
Despite their absence, the wedding party decides to carry on with the festivities. Daniels will play Victoria’s father, George, who is described as a man determined to maintain appearances as the celebration begins to unravel around him.
The film is being directed by Trudie Styler, whose previous work as a filmmaker includes Freak Show and Posso Entrare? An Ode to Naples.
Styler and Celine Rattray will produce through Maven Screen Media, with Piers Tempest producing for Tempo Productions.
Daniels has enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades, with roles ranging from Dumb and Dumber and The Purple Rose of Cairo to The Squid and the Whale and The Martian.
He has also enjoyed major television success, winning an Emmy for his performance as Will McAvoy in HBO drama The Newsroom and another for his role in Netflix western Godless.
The 71-year-old recently returned to comedy on television with a role in the third series of Apple TV’s Shrinking.
While the story takes place at a grand Scottish estate, producers have not yet announced where filming will take place or whether the production will actually shoot in Scotland.
If Scotland is selected, the premise would lend itself to one of the country’s historic country houses or castles, continuing a recent run of international film and television productions using Scottish estates and landscapes as major locations.
Further casting, production dates and release plans for The Reception are still to be announced.
