Macari's Café in Galashiels swaps hands after more than 100 years of family ownership

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has announced the sale the lease for Macari’s Café, a long-standing, family run business located in the heart of Galashiels.

Serving home-cooked meals, all-day breakfasts and gluten-free options, Macari’s Café is a traditional café with both indoor seating and significant outdoor seating capacity of approximately 50 covers.

Macari’s Café is ideally situated on the High Street in Galashiels, and the area enjoys high pedestrian traffic from shoppers, commuters, and visitors arriving via the Borders Railway. The town centre is well served by public transport and offers ample parking nearby, making it a convenient and attractive destination for locals and tourists alike.

With over 100 years of trading history, the charming café has built a strong reputation within the local community and continues to enjoy the support of a loyal customer base.

Siblings Philip and Gina Macari, who’s family have owned the business since 1924, decided to bring the café to market as they look forward to a well-earned retirement.

Following a sales process led by Rob O’Brien at Christie & Co, the lease for Macari’s Cafe has been sold to M.A. Muquit, CEO of Bean & Blanket Ltd, who aims to expand the café’s offering.

Philip and Gina, said, “After nearly 102 years these are difficult words to write. We know we aren’t just saying goodbye to a café, we are saying goodbye to a little piece of Gala history. It is a place filled with stories that can never be recreated and memories that will stay with us long after the final cup has been cleared away.

“Thank you to every person who has worked for us over the years and thank you for allowing Macari’s Café to be a small part of your lives. We hope you will show the new owners the same love and support you have shown to us over the years.”

M.A. Muquit, adds, “I’m delighted to be taking over the café and becoming part of the Galashiels community. I’m passionate about hospitality, great coffee and creating a welcoming place for everyone. My aim is to build on the café’s foundations while bringing fresh ideas, quality food and excellent service to the local community.”

Rob, O’Brien, Senior Business Agent, Retail & Leisure at Christie & Co, comments, “Macari’s Café is a well-established business in the heart of the community and presents a fantastic opportunity for a new owner to take an already successful operation and grow it further.

“Interest throughout the sales process was strong, highlighting the continued demand for quality hospitality businesses in prominent locations. I would like to thank the vendor for entrusting us with the sale and wish them a long and happy retirement.”

Macari’s Café was sold at an undisclosed sum, off a leasehold asking price of £15,000.
