A man is due to appear in court after a police officer was injured during disorder following Celtic’s match against Hearts.

Police Scotland said a 23-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault on an officer following a disturbance on Springfield Road in Glasgow after Sunday’s Scottish Premiership fixture.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment and was later released.

The 23-year-old is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday, 19 October.

Police are also carrying out a separate investigation into an alleged assault on a 22-year-old man before the match.

The incident is understood to have happened on Celtic Way at London Road between 2.45pm and 2.55pm.

Footage circulated on social media show rival supporters involved in clashes outside Celtic Park before kick-off, with punches thrown and barriers and other objects caught up in the disorder.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 23-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an assault on a police officer following a disturbance on Springfield Road, Glasgow, after the Celtic and Hearts match on Sunday October 18, 2026.

“The officer was taken to hospital and released after treatment.

“The 23-year-old man is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday October 19, 2026.

“Enquiries are ongoing into a report of an assault on a 22-year-old man in Celtic Way at London Road, which took place between 2.45pm and 2.55pm on Sunday.”

The disorder came as Hearts returned to Celtic Park for the first time since the dramatic final day of last season, when Celtic clinched the Premiership title and scenes following the match led to criticism from Hearts and a major police investigation.

In May, thousands of supporters gathered in Glasgow after Celtic’s title victory, with police reporting attacks on officers and a series of arrests.

Sunday’s match itself ended in a emphatic 7-1 victory for Celtic, with the champions moving four points clear at the top of the Premiership.

Police enquiries into the incidents remain ongoing.
