More Glasgow Southside streets set for 20mph speed limits

More streets across Glasgow’s Southside are getting set for 20mph speed limits.

Phase 3 of the citywide rollout which is expected to start in late November/early December 2026, will see 504 streets or street sections across the wards of Cardonald, Pollokshields and Langside join Glasgow’s growing 20mph network.

A small number of streets within the neighbouring wards of Govan, Linn, Newlands - Auldburn and Southside Central will also be included at this time to support a practical and consistent rollout.

The new speed limits will focus on residential streets, routes to schools and other roads used every day by local communities - helping to create safer neighbourhoods and reduce the likelihood and severity of road traffic collisions.

The wider, citywide programme will see around 3,800 streets and street sections across Glasgow change from 30mph to 20mph - supporting a national move towards lower speed limits in built-up areas.

The legal order enabling the changes for Phase 3 is expected to come into effect in December 2026, with initial work to support the rollout due to start in late November/early December.

Once the legal order is in place, the necessary 20mph signage and road markings will be installed, after which the new 20mph limits will come into effect.

Delivery of Glasgow’s 20mph programme by area phase has been shaped by a detailed assessment of Glasgow’s road network, with the rollout order informed by collision data - particularly incidents involving people walking and cycling.

Roads with existing speed limits of 40mph or above are not affected.

Residents and businesses are invited to find out more about the new speed limits at a public information drop-in event at Pollokshields Library, on Tuesday 10 November 2026 (4pm-7pm).
