Proposals that would see The Three Chimneys at Colbost expanded alongside new visitor accommodation, and improvements to the wider site overlooking Loch Dunvegan, have been recommended for approval.

Plans submitted to Highland Council include extensions to the restaurant and adjoining hotel accommodation, as well as the creation of eight self-contained holiday units.

The development would also include additional parking, electric vehicle charging points, landscaping and associated infrastructure.

The planning application went before Highland Council’s North Planning Applications Committee with council planning officers recommending that permission should be granted.

The Three Chimneys has been a destination restaurant on Skye for four decades and has developed an international reputation for showcasing Scottish and Highland produce.

Located at Colbost in the north-west of the island, the restaurant occupies a collection of traditional whitewashed buildings close to the shore of Loch Dunvegan.

The business also operates The House Over-By with rooms for visitors dining at the restaurant.

The Three Chimneys is part of The Wee Hotel Company, the Scottish hospitality business founded by hotelier Gordon Campbell Gray. Its portfolio also includes the Pierhouse Hotel at Port Appin and The Three Chimneys at Talisker distillery. 

The proposed development, should it be approved and move forward, would represent a significant investment in The Three Chimneys site and increase the amount of accommodation available to visitors.

The restaurant has played an important role in establishing Skye as one of Scotland’s leading food destinations, attracting diners from across the UK and overseas to its remote location.

Highland Council planning officers have recommended approval of the application, subject to conditions.
