A popular Scottish pub group is investing £250,000 in a new Dundee venue which will feature live music at least five nights a week.
Malones is transforming the former BrewDog premises on Panmure Street into its latest Irish pub. The prominent city centre venue is within the Category A-listed Chamber Building and has been empty since BrewDog closed its Dundee bar last year.
Renovation work is now under way, with Malones targeting a late-September opening.
The new pub will include a dedicated stage for live performances, snugs and booths, a large bespoke bar and a whisky gantry.
Malones says it wants local musicians to be at the heart of the venue, with performers taking to the stage at least five nights every week.
The performance area will also be used for larger celebrations including St Patrick’s Day, while the company is actively looking for Dundee musicians interested in performing at the venue.
The £250,000 investment is expected to create around 20 full and part-time jobs across the bar, kitchen, floor and business support teams.
Malones already operates pubs in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Leith and has built its reputation around Irish hospitality, live sport and music.
The Dundee opening will see the group retain many of the original features of its historic new home.
Exposed brick walls, steel beams and ornate windows will remain, while the interior will be filled with traditional pub furniture and memorabilia sourced from auctions and dealers in Ireland.
New artist impressions released ahead of the opening show dark timber, booth seating and a traditional Irish pub-style interior alongside the new performance space.
Malones said it had wanted to open in Dundee for some time, pointing to the city’s large student population, Irish community and established hospitality scene.
Food will also form a significant part of the new operation. Malones is bringing its popular spice bags to Dundee alongside pub favourites including burgers, fish and chips, loaded fries and chicken wings.
Irish products including Tayto crisps, Club Orange and West Coast Coolers are also expected to feature, while the company says it intends to work with local suppliers where possible.
Malones says it wants the Dundee venue to become known for serving one of the best pints of Guinness in the city, while the wider group was one of three Scottish venues included in the Guinness Harp Guide this year.
Live sport will provide another major focus, with the pub planning to show football, rugby, GAA, Formula 1, NFL and other major events.
The opening will bring one of Dundee city centre’s most prominent vacant hospitality spaces back into use.
BrewDog opened in the Chamber Building in 2012 but closed its Dundee bar in July 2025 as part of a wider reduction in the brewer’s UK pub estate.
Malones subsequently confirmed this summer that it would take over the site, promising to “breathe new life” into the building.
Planning proposals for the venue have included a function room, stage, office space and cellars as the company reshapes the former BrewDog for its new use.
Malones is currently recruiting ahead of the opening and says it wants the pub to work as somewhere for lunch and drinks during the day before developing into a livelier music-led venue in the evening.
