Scottish artist Ross Muir has unveiled a new artwork to help provide extra art materials for pupils at Castlehead High School in Paisley.
Titled Prefect, the piece celebrates Muir’s long-standing relationship with the school and pays tribute to the late John Byrne, who also shared a special connection with its art department.
Originally from Alexandria, Muir first visited Castlehead several years ago to meet pupils and see their work. The experience proved as inspiring for him as it was for the pupils. He left in awe of their passion and talent, and the dedication of their teachers.
Forever grateful for that first invitation, Muir has returned regularly. Through these visits, he became increasingly aware of the challenges teachers face in providing materials for large classes, something familiar to art departments across Scotland. Determined to help, he promised art teacher Gemma Scullion, he would do something for the school.
The result is Prefect, inspired by Byrne’s Self Portrait in Stetson (1989), one of Muir’s favourite paintings at Kelvingrove Museum. It features a prefect badge identical to one gifted to Muir on his first school visit, reflecting the importance of positive role models in young people’s lives.
Ross Muir, known for reimagining figures in art history, said “The work Emma and the team are doing is nothing short of a miracle. I’m constantly blown away by the kids, their passion and talent, and what they manage to achieve despite the challenges and restrictions they face. It’s just great to be involved with these guys. They’re so passionate and fearless, and it’s a real privilege to be part of it, seeing them grow and develop over the years I’ve been visiting.”
He added, “Art has been my saviour. Falling into painting changed my life. It keeps me busy and out of trouble to this day, and I really owe my life to it. It just feels great to be involved with the school and give back in any way I can.”
Emma Lang, Teacher of Art & Design at Castlehead, said “Art and creativity are hugely important to our pupils. They build confidence, help young people discover their talents and open up opportunities far beyond the classroom.
“We’re incredibly proud of their ambition and creativity. Having inspirational figures like Ross Muir and John Byrne connected to our school shows them what’s possible. Our S2 pupils even look forward to designing Ross Muir-inspired Christmas cards every year.”
