Sébastien Pocognoli has made changes to the Scotland squad for his first matches in charge, handing opportunities to a new generation of players ahead of the Nations League campaign.
The new Scotland head coach has named seven uncapped players in his 28-man group, with Sevilla striker Robbie Ure, Celtic defender Colby Donovan, Brøndby captain Luis Binks, Swansea City’s Stephen Welsh and Hearts winger Josh McPake among the new faces.
Oli McBurnie has also been recalled more than five years after his last Scotland appearance, while Billy Gilmour returns after missing the World Cup through injury.
Pocognoli has retained established figures including captain Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney, John McGinn, Lewis Ferguson and Angus Gunn, but 12 players who travelled to this summer’s World Cup are absent from his first squad.
Scott McTominay misses the international window as he continues his recovery following a heart procedure. Ché Adams is injured, while Rangers striker Lawrence Shankland is sidelined with a hamstring problem.
Grant Hanley, John Souttar, Anthony Ralston, Dominic Hyam and Lyndon Dykes are among the established internationals who have not been selected.
One of the most eye-catching inclusions is 22-year-old Ure, who has forced his way into the senior squad after an unusual route to the top level.
The former Rangers academy striker scored 20 goals in 20 appearances for Swedish club Sirius before earning a £5.5 million move to Sevilla during the summer.
Donovan has also been rewarded after establishing himself in Celtic’s first team, while Binks has impressed in Denmark where he captains Brøndby.
McPake has earned recognition following his summer move to Hearts, with Tynecastle teammate James Wilson also returning to the senior squad.
Pocognoli was appointed Scotland head coach in August following Steve Clarke’s departure after the national team was eliminated at the group stage of the World Cup.
The Belgian’s first game will be away to Slovenia on Saturday 26 September.
Scotland then face Switzerland at Hampden on Tuesday 29 September before travelling to North Macedonia on Saturday 3 October. Slovenia visit Hampden on Tuesday 6 October.
