Scottish teenager Seb Fisher has capped a remarkable start to his international career by helping Uganda win the 2026 CECAFA Under-17 Championship.

The 16-year-old Partick Thistle forward converted a penalty in the final as Uganda defeated Somalia 6-5 in a shoot-out after a goalless draw at Kigali Pele Stadium in Rwanda.

Fisher was one of six Uganda players to score from the spot, with goalkeeper David Dean Ssegirinya emerging as the shoot-out hero after saving three Somalia penalties.

The victory completed an extraordinary few weeks for Fisher, who was born and raised in Scotland but is eligible to play for Uganda through his mother Kate, who was born in the East African country.

Fisher made his Uganda debut earlier this month, announced himself by coming off the bench to score a hat-trick in an 8-0 victory over Burundi in the opening game of the tournament.

He said afterwards it had been an “unbelievable experience”.

Uganda went on to finish top of their group before beating Ethiopia 4-0 in the semi-final, a result which also secured qualification for the 2027 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

They then completed the job against Somalia, with Fisher holding his nerve during the decisive shoot-out.

Speaking after lifting his first international trophy, Fisher said: “It’s been an unbelievable tournament. I can’t put it into words how I am feeling right now.”

The youngster praised his teammates and coaching staff and described wearing the Uganda jersey as an honour.

Fisher’s route into international football began when Uganda became aware that he and his older brother Olly were eligible through their mother.

Their grandparents had lived in Uganda for several years after their grandfather moved there to work as a teacher, with Kate Fisher born in the country during their stay.

Seb and 18-year-old goalkeeper Olly were subsequently invited to train with Uganda’s youth teams.

Both brothers are part of the Partick Thistle set-up, with Seb playing as a striker.

Seb was selected for Uganda’s final squad for the tournament in Rwanda following his spell at the country’s training camp.

The Uganda Under-17 side is coached by former Hearts and Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston.
