TGI Fridays is to close its landmark restaurant on Glasgow’s Buchanan Street after more than three decades in the city centre.

The American restaurant chain will serve customers for the final time at 113 Buchanan Street on Monday 19 October, bringing an end to a 33-year run at one of Glasgow’s most prominent locations.

TGI Fridays says the closure was not its decision, with landlord Royal London Asset Management choosing to end the restaurant’s tenancy.

The company will continue to operate its other Glasgow restaurants at Silverburn and Glasgow Fort and says it is working to protect as many jobs as possible.

A TGI Fridays spokesperson said: “After 33 incredible years at 113 Buchanan Street, our Glasgow Buchanan Street restaurant will be closing its doors on 19 October 2026.

“This decision was not ours to make, as our landlord has chosen to end our tenancy.

“We are incredibly grateful to our amazing team and loyal guests who have made this restaurant such a special part of Glasgow over the years.

“We are working hard to protect as many roles as possible by offering opportunities at our nearby restaurants.”

The closure marks the end of an era for a restaurant which has occupied the highly visible corner of Buchanan Street and Gordon Street since 1993.

TGI Fridays appeared to have secured its long-term future at the site last year.

In February 2025, it was announced that the company’s new owners had agreed a new 15-year lease for the Buchanan Street restaurant.

Plans have since emerged to prepare the A-listed Tontine House premises for a future retail tenant.

Documents submitted on behalf of Royal London Asset Management outline alterations intended to make the prominent unit more attractive and accessible for retail use.

The proposals include changes associated with the future occupation of the former restaurant space by a new retailer, although the identity of any incoming business has not been confirmed.

TGI Fridays has been a fixture of the UK casual dining scene since its first British restaurant opened in Birmingham in 1986.

The Buchanan Street restaurant arrived seven years later and became part of a wave of American-style restaurants which influenced casual dining in Glasgow during the 1990s.
