Tributes to ‘warm and kind’ Glasgow bartender Daniel Colrain after city centre death

Tributes have been paid to a “warm and kind” young Glasgow bartender who died after being seriously injured during a disturbance in the city centre.

Daniel Colrain, 21, was taken to hospital after an incident involving several men in Royal Exchange Square at around 3.05am on Sunday, 4 October. He died in hospital the following day.

Daniel worked behind the bar at The Old Smiddy in Cathcart, where colleagues said they had been left “completely heartbroken” by his death.

He had worked at the southside pub for three years and had become a familiar face to regulars. The pub said Daniel had formed close friendships with colleagues and was a much-loved presence in the community where he grew up.

In a tribute, staff said: “To know Daniel was to experience his warmth and kindness firsthand.”

They added that he “brought so much light to our team” and would be “dearly, dearly missed”.

Friends, customers and members of the community have also shared memories of the 21-year-old, describing him as funny, kind-hearted and someone who always had time for others.

One regular described Daniel as a man who “just loved a laugh and a joke”, while others remembered him as a loyal friend and a familiar presence behind the bar.

A fundraising appeal set up by staff at The Old Smiddy to support Daniel’s family with funeral and memorial costs has received a huge response.

The JustGiving appeal was initially launched with a £2,000 target but had raised more than £24,000 from more than 1,000 donations this morning.

Police Scotland confirmed on Wednesday that a 19-year-old man had been arrested in connection with Daniel’s death. Enquiries are continuing.

A second 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with the disturbance at the time and was later released pending further enquiries.

Another 21-year-old man was also assaulted during the incident and sustained minor injuries.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with that assault and is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Tuesday.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and have set up a dedicated online portal for members of the public to submit information.

Police have previously appealed to anyone who witnessed what happened or who may have information which could assist the investigation to come forward.

Detective Inspector Jonny MacKinnon, of Greater Glasgow CID, said officers were determined to establish the full circumstances and get answers for Daniel’s family.

Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police can contact officers on 101, quoting incident number 0494 of Sunday, 4 October 2026.
