Urgent work under way to reopen Kilcreggan Pier in Helensburgh

Every effort is being made to progress works and re-open Kilcreggan Pier which sustained damage during Storm Boelo at the weekend.

These efforts recognise the importance of the pier to the local community and the impact the pier’s closure has on ferry services, between Kilcreggan and Gourock, which are currently suspended.

Approximately six tonnes of debris has been thrown up onto the pier deck, by the might of the waves, which is being cleared. Initial safety inspections have identified a range of remedial works required to make the structure safe to re-open the pier:

  • Reinstate the existing toe boards, which are expected to be reusable;
  •
  • Replace and reinstate damaged decking boards along the berthing face;
  •
  • Lift approximately 20 Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) deck panels to clear debris and inspect the underlying timber deck structure;
  •
  • Inspect the structure from the water using a small boat to identify damage not visible from deck level;
  •
  • Investigate and repair water supply issues;
  •
  • Carry out electrical safety inspections.

Arrangements have been made for a contractor to assist with the inspections and remedial work.

The pier will remain closed until the inspections are complete and it has been confirmed safe for public use.
