Renfrew Bridge is to close tonight “for a number of months” after suffering extensive water damage during Storm Boelo.

The local authority has announced the bridge will close to the public from 8pm this evening (Wednesday 28th October).

Renfrewshire Council apologised for the inconvenience this will cause.

The electronic systems controlling the hydraulics in the operating plant room on the Renfrew side of the bridge were significantly damaged during the storm.

Urgent work is now underway to identify the issues behind the damage and get the bridge back into action as soon as possible.

A council spokesperson said: “We’ll keep the public updated with further details as the work progresses.

“We are legally obliged to keep the Clyde open to river traffic. Arrangements are being put in place to allow an emergency opening of the bridge, and keep it open to allow river vessels to pass through.

“However these temporary arrangements are not suitable for maintaining normal bridge operations.

“The damage to the bridge would not have been prevented by activating the North Renfrew flood management scheme, which was designed to protect a different area from where the operating plant room is located.”

The exceptional tidal surge on Saturday night recorded water levels in Renfrew at 6.7metres - the highest since digital records began in 1998 and more than twice the level forecast.

Updates on the works will be posted on the Renfrew Bridge WhatsApp Channel.
