When and where to see the solar eclipse in Scotland
Scotland will experience its first solar eclipse in three decades tomorrow and here is all you need to know about this rare astronomical event. The partial eclipse will see up to 95 per cent of the sun disappear behind the moon in the most significant solar event visible from the UK since 1999. Causing a twilight effect across the country for up to two hours, the sun will shrink to a thin crescent with Glasgow set to experience the biggest blackout (91 per cent) due to start at 6.08pm. The peak of the eclipse will occur about an hour later, with the whole event ending just before 8pm. Meanwhile 90 per cent of Edinburgh will fall dark as the eclipse reaches its peak at 7.05pm. The Isle of Barra will have the best view in the country with coverage of around 93 per cent. People are being warned not to look directly at the sun during the spectacle and to wear certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers for safety. Here is a selection of community events are taking place across the country to mark the unique event: Whitelee Windfarm Visitor Centre, Eaglesham, East Renfrewshire - Open to the public from 4 until 7.30pm there will be free Arts & Crafts from 4-6pm for anyone coming to see the eclipse. There will also be a 5km walk from the Visitor Centre to Blackwood Hill Viewpoint to see the eclipse from a higher vantage point. The Cafe will also be open for hot drinks and traybakes. Red Burn Farm, Blantyre, South Lanarkshire - Starting at 6pm, eclipse glasses will be available at the family-friendly event. Edinburgh Playfair Observatory, Calton Hill, Edinburgh - Members of the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh will be on hand to explain more about the eclipse. Beirhope Farm, Hownam, Scottish Borders - The event starts at 5.30pm and features a talk from the resident astronomy expert, who will introduce Beirhope’s new telescope. Dark Space Planetarium, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway— the Dark Space team plan to go to the harbour with their solar telescope, clear skies permitting. Glen Tanar Visitor Centre, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire - Join the team at Glen Tanar for the rare astronomical event. Rum Bunkhouse, Isle of Rum, Highlands - Solar telescopes will be set up at the island’s campsite from 6pm.
