Work on Glasgow’s Stockwell Street Avenue project roadworks to start next week
Contractors will go on site to begin work on the latest city centre Avenue on Monday 10 August. The next stage in the biggest change to the city centre’s streets since the 1070s will include resurfaced roads; new wider pavements with Caithness stone; new trees and raingardens between Bridgegate and Howard Street; upgraded traffic signals; and a new two-way segregated cycleway on the west side between Bridgegate and Howard St, with the northbound cycleway to continue to Stockwell Place.
This new cycleway will connect with the South City Way at the southern end and the cycleway on the Argyle Street East Avenue at the northern end when complete.
This Avenue will be created on the stretch of Stockwell Street between Trongate and Bridgegate and work will take place in three phases, with the first between Trongate and Osborne Street; the second between Bridgegate and Howard Street; and the third between Howard Street and Osborne Street.
Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for City Centre Recovery at Glasgow City Council, said: “The Stockwell Street Avenue will not only help to make this part of the city centre a more attractive place for all who live, work and visit there, but also improve the connections for people traveling in different ways to and from the city centre. The investment in this Avenue mirrors the developments taking place and planned in this historic part of Glasgow.
“We have already been engaging with residents and business about the works to deliver this new Avenue, and we’ll continue to keep everyone up to date on its progress.”
The project is expected to be completed in late 2027.
Glasgow City Council adds that: “Progress is also being made with ongoing Avenues, including the Argyle Street West Avenue, substantially completed up to the Hope Street junction, with contractors now completing the junction work at the Hielanman’s Umbrella.”
