More than 180 young athletes from across Scotland took to the track at the Glasgow International Arena on Saturday for the SprintFastest All-Star Indoor Championships.

The event brought together some of the country’s fastest young sprinters across five age categories, with competitors representing 24 local authority areas.

The championships were supported by sportscotland through the Scottish Government’s £20 million Summer of Sport programme, which aims to create more opportunities for children and young people to take part in sport and physical activity.

The indoor event followed the inaugural SprintFastest competition at Grangemouth Stadium in March, with this year’s championships expanded to give even more young athletes the chance to compete.

SprintFastest was founded by Dr Enoch Adeyemi to create an accessible youth athletics event, with a focus on inclusivity, confidence and developing pathways into the sport.

He said the event was about “much more than racing”, giving young people the opportunity to shine and see what they can achieve when given the right platform.

Minister for Community Care Alison Thewliss MSP and sportscotland Chair Maureen Campbell attended the championships on Saturday to see the impact of the Summer of Sport investment.

Ms Thewliss said the programme was helping children and young people discover the “joy of being active” while removing barriers to participation.

The wider Summer of Sport programme, launched in May 2026, has supported local authorities, schools, clubs and sporting organisations to provide free and low-cost activities for those aged between three and 26.

Interim sportscotland research found 75% of children and young people surveyed said they had become more active after taking part, while 79% said the programme had encouraged them to do more sport.

A quarter had also taken up a new sport, while one in five had joined a new club.

The programme will continue beyond the summer, with further opportunities planned to encourage young people across Scotland to get active and try new sports.
