Dundee is a city on the east coast of Scotland, situated on the north bank of the River Tay. Its history stretches back many centuries, with early settlements developing around the river.
During the medieval period, Dundee grew as a trading port and became an important centre for commerce in Scotland.
From the 18th and 19th centuries, Dundee became famous for three major industries: 'jute, jam and journalism'. Jute manufacturing transformed the city, with large numbers of workers employed in mills producing textiles. The city's port also expanded, supporting trade and shipbuilding, while businesses such as James Keiller & Sons helped establish Dundee's reputation for jam.
Today, Dundee is known for its universities, technology, culture and design, and it became the UK's first 'UNESCO City of Design' in 2014. Attractions such as the V&A Dundee and the RRS Discovery reflect the city's continuing connection with innovation, exploration and the River Tay.
