Scottish folk love a summer festival and this year’s calendar of events is sure to bring the energy, community spirit, fresh talent and unforgettable performances to the party. We’ve picked out some of the events we are looking forward to in August and September across the country. Party in the Palace (Linlithgow, August 8–9) featuring Cast, The Bluebells, Sandi Thom and the Bay City Rollers is set against the stunning castle backdrop of Linlithgow Palace. Expect a family-friendly atmosphere during an unforgettable weekend of live music. Summer’s End (Brechin, August 14–16) will be a thrilling weekend of live music with global icons The Jacksons, Rudimental and Sugababes on the bill. Edge Fest (Jedburgh, September 4-6) showcases a mixed bag of music, arts and community spirit promoting fresh talent and sizzling summer performances. Black Isle Calling (Inverness, September 11-12) is an independent music festival combining live performances, local food, craft beer and camping in a relaxed rural setting. BBC Radio 2 in the Park (Stirling, September 11-13) will welcome revellers for a major three-day live music festival featuring headline acts from Radio 2’s biggest artists, plus family entertainment, food stalls, and a lively open-air atmosphere. This year’s line-up includes Chaka Khan, Simple Minds, The Script, Emeli Sandé, Cast and Blue. Islay Jazz Festival (September 11-13) involves a lively weekend of jazz performances, concerts and community events set against Islay’s stunning coastal scenery. Jura Music Festival (September 25-27) is a community festival showcase of traditional music, ceilidhs and concerts attracting musicians and visitors from across Scotland and beyond. Daytime workshops include pipe band drumming. And keeping the music fever going in the capital this August, Edinburgh Summer Sessions kicks off at the Royal Highland Showgrounds on the 21st with Scots indie rock favourites Biffy Clyro. Biffy will be joined by Nothing But Thieves and Swim School. A brand-new family-focused one day festival created by Nathan Evans and The Saint Phnx Band comes to the Royal Highland Centre on August 22. Designed as a festival for all the family, it promises a lively mix of music and all-day entertainment for all ages. For the young festival-goers there will be face painting, immersive story sessions, arts and crafts, workshops, kids yoga, messy play, a dedicated music and singing tent, lively funfair attractions and a cast of roaming entertainers who will bring the site to life. Explore the festival’s market, celebrating local artists, crafters and small creative businesses. Rock icons The Cure continue the Summer Sessions on August 23 with support from Mogwai, Slowdive and Just Mustard. Florence + The Machine take to the stage on August 24 supported by Self Esteem and Jacob Alon. Lorde headline on August 25 with Zara Larsson, Audrey Hobert and Alessi Rose on support duties. Deftones take to the stage on August 27 supported by IDLES and Ecca Vandal, before The Prodigy unleash their back catalogue of hits on the Showgrounds crowd on August 29 with Carl Cox, ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, David Rodigan, SCARLXRD, Slam and Frazi.er opening for the dance act. The band bring their Warriors Dance experience to you complete with new production and their sonically attacking wall of sound.
