Batman Part II filming begins as Gotham City comes to Glasgow
Excitement is building as Glasgow is set to once again be transformed into Gotham City for The Batman sequel. Fans are yet to find out which stars will be coming to town with Robert Pattinson returning as Batman, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin with appearances from Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Charles Dance. Directed by Matt Reeves from a screenplay he wrote with Mattson Tomlin based on the DC Comics character Batman, it is the sequel to The Batman (2022) which shot its closing scenes in Glasgow’s Necropolis. Set during the winter after the flooding of Gotham City, Bruce Wayne investigates another case that further explores the corruption and division within the city. Glasgow has been the go-to film location for superhero Hollywood blockbusters in recent years due to its 19th Century Victorian architecture and grid street system similar to major American cities like New York. Spider-Man: A Brand New Day starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, Indiana Jones and Avengers: End Game have all used Glasgow as a backdrop. A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: “The range of architecture in the city – particularly our heritage buildings and the city centre’s grid system – is of particular interest to productions looking to recreate the streets of sometimes real, sometimes fictional, American cities. “While it is undoubtedly exciting to welcome major productions and see the likes of Spider-Man swinging along Bothwell Street, the bread and butter of filming in Glasgow is for UK broadcast productions, and these have helped to grow a thriving film sector in the city, providing jobs for local people in a variety of roles.” Film crews for The Batman: Part II have arrived in Glasgow. The main filming is expected to start on 18 August with road closures and restrictions to pedestrian access around the Kingston Bridge on North Street and Newton Street. Some parking restrictions are already in place on Bothwell Street, St Vincent Street and Wellington Street, similar to what was in place for filming on the latest Spider-Man movie. The Batman: Part II premieres in cinemas on February 18, 2028.
