What to expect as Storm Austen and Storm Boelo hit Scotland

Scotland is set to be battered by gale-force winds and torrential rain this weekend as the country is hit by Storm Austen and Storm Boelo.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind covering the whole of the country.

What is Storm Austen?

The worst of the winds from Storm Austen won’t hit Scotland, heavy rain is forecast.

A yellow weather warning is in place for much of the country from 6am on Friday until midnight.

People are being warned that there is a small chance homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings and disruption is also expected on rail, road, ferry and air transport services, with some communities at risk of being cut off by flooded roads.

An area of heavy rain will develop across southern and central areas of Scotland before dawn Friday in association with Storm Austen, extending over northeast Scotland during the morning and early afternoon.

Accumulations of 20-40 mm are expected widely within the warning area through this period, with 60-80 mm possible in some locations.
