George Square road to close for three days ahead of Glasgow Christmas Village opening

The north side of George Square, between Anchor Lane and North Frederick Street, will be closed to traffic from 2pm on Wednesday 11 November until 6pm on Friday 13 November.

The closure will allow work to take place ahead of the opening of the Good Times Christmas Village on Thursday 19 November.

Glasgow City Council has confirmed temporary traffic arrangements will be in place around the square.

Anchor Lane will continue to operate southbound, with permitted traffic able to use the bus gate at Nelson Mandela Place to access West George Street before exiting via Anchor Lane and St Vincent Place.

North Frederick Street will operate southbound between Cathedral Street and Martha Street, with two-way traffic permitted south of Martha Street while its junction with George Square North remains closed.

The road closure comes as the £20 million transformation of George Square enters its final stages.

Construction hoardings are being removed in phases, revealing new paving, landscaping, seating and other features installed as part of the redevelopment.

The east side of the square is due to welcome the public for Remembrance Sunday on 8 November, followed by Armistice Day commemorations on 11 November.

Preparations for the Christmas Village will begin on 12 November.

The festive attraction is scheduled to open on 19 November, alongside the city’s Christmas lights celebrations.

Other attractions returning to Glasgow this month include the Winter Wonderland at St Enoch Square from Friday 6 November and Glasgow Green’s Winter Wonderland from 20 November.

Some sections of George Square will remain closed while construction work continues.

The south carriageway is expected to be completed by mid-November, although vehicles will not be able to use the newly constructed road until it has undergone a curing period. Traffic access is currently expected to resume by mid-December.
