Passengers travelling to and from Glasgow Airport in November are being advised of extended weekend closures on the M8 motorway.

Sections of the road are scheduled to shut between Saturday 7 November and Sunday 8 November as well as Saturday 14 November and Sunday 15 November.

During these periods, Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland, is undertaking essential refurbishments of the Cornwall Street and Kirkwood Street footbridges that span between Junction 21 (Seaward Street) and Junction 23 (Dumbreck).

The works represent a significant investment by Transport Scotland in improving key active travel assets in Glasgow and will support the long-term safety, reliability, and usability of the footbridges.

A Glasgow Airport spokesperson said: “Significant delays are expected across the surrounding road network and diversion routes.

“As such, passengers travelling to and from the airport during this time are advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.”

Where and when will the closures come into effect?

From 6pm on Saturday, 7 November until 1pm on Sunday 8 November:

  • The M8 eastbound will be closed between Junctions 24 (Helen Street) and 22 (Plantation), including the Helen Street eastbound on-slip road.
  •
  • The M8 westbound main and secondary carriageways will be shut between Junctions 22 and 24.
  •
  • The M8 westbound secondary Junction 21 Carnoustie Street on-slip road will also be closed.
  •
  • The M77 in both directions will be unaffected.

From 6pm on Saturday, 14 November until 1pm on Sunday 15 November:

  • All 16 lanes of the M8 will be closed during this weekend.
  •
  • The M8 eastbound will be closed between Junctions 24 and 22, including the Helen Street eastbound on-slip road.
  •
  • The M77 northbound from Junction 1 (Dumbreck Road) will be closed including the Dumbreck on-slip road.
  •
  • The M8 westbound will be closed between Junctions 20 (Kingston Bridge) and 24 (Helen Street).

During the second weekend, there will be additional closures on the M77 and the M74 as well as various slip roads.

All works are weather dependent and could be cancelled or reprogrammed if weather conditions are not favourable.

As such, a contingency weekend is provisionally programmed from 6pm on Saturday, 21 November until 1pm on Sunday, 22 November.

Passengers planning to travel on the new Citylink 903 Service to Glasgow Airport are advised that this service will be unaffected by the M8 closures but will be impacted by the recent Renfrew Bridge closure.

Several other bus routes from the airport will be diverted during this time.

A spokesperson for First Bus commented: “These closures will affect our Service 500 to Glasgow Airport, Service X8 to the Silverburn retail park and trips on both routes to Buchanan Bus Station.

“Our team has worked carefully to minimise disruption on the diversions we have put in place to ensure we continue to serve most stops, and drivers will be advising customers of three alternatives to use as the bus begins the changed route.

“It is likely there will be delays and we strongly advise customers to plan in advance for trips on these dates. Full details of the diversions can be found on our website.”
