Glasgow Christmas market returns this week – everything you need to know

Glasgow’s Christmas market returns this week as the city begins its countdown to the festive season.

Winter Wonderland at St Enoch Square will open on Friday 6 November, bringing Christmas stalls, food and drink, rides and its giant observation wheel back to the city centre.

The market will run until Sunday 27 December, with entry free and visitors paying separately for rides, food and other attractions.

It is the first of two Glasgow Winter Wonderland sites to open this year, with a larger attraction at Glasgow Green following on Friday 20 November.

Here is everything you need to know.

When does Glasgow Christmas market open?

Winter Wonderland at St Enoch Square opens on Friday 6 November and will run until Sunday 27 December.

Between 6 November and 20 December, the opening hours are:

Sunday to Wednesday – noon until 9pm

Thursday and Friday – noon until 10pm

Saturday – 10am until 10pm

From 21 to 23 December, the market will open from 10am until 10pm.

It will open from 10am until 8pm on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day.

The market will then reopen from noon until 8pm on Boxing Day and Sunday 27 December.

What attractions will there be?

One of the biggest attractions returning to St Enoch Square is the solar-powered Observation Wheel, giving visitors views across Glasgow city centre.

The giant wheel proved popular during last year’s festivities and will again form one of the centrepieces of the market.

There will also be a selection of family-friendly children’s rides, with further attractions due to be announced.

What food and drink will be available?

The market will feature a covered licensed festive bar with music and free live entertainment throughout the event.

Food options announced by the organisers include traditional bratwurst from the Swing Grill, as well as churros, Dutch pancakes and loaded doughnuts.

A selection of festive drinks and other seasonal food will also be available.

Can you do Christmas shopping?

A range of traders will set up in St Enoch Square selling gifts, crafts and festive products.

Organisers say shoppers can expect personalised Christmas decorations and other seasonal gifts alongside the food stalls.

Where is the entrance?

The main entrance to the Christmas market will be from Argyle Street.

St Enoch Subway station is beside the square, while Glasgow Central and Queen Street railway stations are both within walking distance.

The site is fully accessible and the Observation Wheel includes an accessible capsule. Accessible toilets will also be available.

Dogs are permitted provided they are kept on a lead.

What about Glasgow Green?

Glasgow’s second Winter Wonderland will open at Glasgow Green on Friday 20 November and run until Sunday 3 January.

The Glasgow Green event will be considerably bigger, with an open-air ice rink, Observation Wheel, Santa’s Grotto and the Very Merry Circus inside a festive Big Top.

Other attractions include the Bavarian Snow Slide, Helter Skelter and a range of family and thrill rides.

From 20 November until 20 December, Glasgow Green will be open from 3pm until 10pm Monday to Friday and noon until 10pm at weekends.

From 21 December until 3 January it will generally open from noon until 10pm, although it will close on Christmas Day and operate reduced hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.

Entry to Glasgow Green is free, although attractions including ice skating, Santa’s Grotto and the circus are ticketed separately.

The two sites will give Glasgow a programme of Christmas attractions stretching from the beginning of November into the New Year.

Will there be anything at George Square?

George Square will also return to the heart of Glasgow’s Christmas celebrations this year following its multi-million pound redevelopment.

A new Christmas Village is due to open on Thursday 19 November, with festive food and drink and new light installations planned for the revamped square.

Preparations for the village will begin from 12 November as more of George Square reopens to the public, while the council has moved away from the traditional one-night Christmas lights switch-on in favour of festive events running across the city throughout November and December.
