Glasgow Film Festival returns to world's tallest cinema as first films for 2027 revealed

Glasgow Film Festival is returning to one of the city’s best-known cinemas as organisers reveal the first films for its 2027 programme.

The festival has announced a partnership with Omniplex Cinemas, which will see it take over an entire floor of the former Cineworld building on Renfrew Street.

Four screens will be dedicated to festival screenings, significantly increasing capacity and strengthening the event’s presence around Sauchiehall Street.

The 23rd Glasgow Film Festival will run from 24 February to 7 March 2027, with Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) remaining its main home.

Organisers have also announced a programme of free classic films, a celebration of Canadian cinema and a new international initiative designed to attract filmmakers and producers to Glasgow.

The first films announced for 2027 include Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies and Videotape, Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up and Richard Linklater’s animated thriller A Scanner Darkly, starring Keanu Reeves.

They form part of a free retrospective called Somebody’s Watching: Surveillance, Voyeurism and Performance, which explores cinema’s fascination with surveillance and the act of watching.

Other titles include George Orwell’s 1984, Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, the psychological thriller Peeping Tom and the Oscar-winning Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour.

Paul Gallagher, Head of Programme for Glasgow Film, said: “In our current moment we are all increasingly aware of being watched, both with and without our consent.”

The festival will also turn its attention to Canada with a special programme called Great Takes: Canadian Cinema.

Among the highlights is the UK premiere of Tangles, an animated drama exploring Alzheimer’s disease. Its voice cast includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Seth Rogen, Abbi Jacobson and Sarah Silverman.

Another film, The Stunt Driver, stars Jay Baruchel as Canadian daredevil Ken Carter, who attempts an extraordinary rocket-powered car jump across the St Lawrence River.

Other selections include the French-Canadian thriller L’autre and A Safe Distance, a crime thriller about a woman who becomes involved with two fugitives after being abandoned in a forest.

The festival will also introduce an International Co-Production Pitch as part of its Industry Focus programme, which runs from 1 to 5 March.

The initiative will allow filmmakers from Scotland, across the UK and internationally to present feature film projects to potential financiers, distributors and production partners.

Debbie Aitken, Head of Operations for Glasgow Film Festival, said the initiative was intended to help create new international partnerships and strengthen Scotland’s film industry.

Glasgow Film Festival enjoyed a record-breaking edition in 2026, attracting more than 37,000 admissions. The event featured films from 44 countries and welcomed high-profile guests including James McAvoy and Scottish director Lynne Ramsay.

The full programme for 2027 will be announced on 20 January, when tickets for the main festival screenings will also go on sale.

Tickets for the free retrospective films will be available from the GFT box office on the morning of each screening rather than in advance.
