Gotham City to return to Glasgow with filming for sequel to The Batman in August
Glasgow will be transformed into Gotham City for The Batman Part II when filming begins next month. Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman Part II will feature Robert Pattinson in the title role, alongside Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance. The blockbuster movie is set to screen in cinemas in October 2027.
Like the first film, The Batman Part II is being filmed at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in England with exterior scenes for Gotham City filmed in Glasgow and Liverpool. Production began in June and will now move to Glasgow next month.
Last year, Luke Hull, the production designer for the Matt Reeves directed sequel, shared photographs from prospective filming locations, including Glasgow Cathedral and Anderston train station. Glasgow has been the backdrop for Gotham City filming for films The Batman and The Flash, alongside the cancelled Batgirl movie that was filmed entirely in the city, though never released.
Matt Reeves trailed returning to the city for the sequel, saying: “Get ready yes, it could very well be that we’ll be coming back to your neighbourhood soon.” Actor Robert Pattinson was another fan of the Glasgow setting: “It looks great as Gotham, who would’ve thought of all the cities in the world, Glasgow as Gotham. The final shots of the Glasgow skyline is beautiful.”
“The architecture in Glasgow is incredible – it has that real 19th century feel to it hence why it makes for a brilliant Gotham. George Square is my favourite part of the city – there is so much wonderful architecture on view from one central location.”
The Herald reported that the production will arrive in Glasgow in early August, with filming over a three-week period, beginning on 18 August.
Filming locations include Bothwell Street, Wellington Street, Glasgow Bridge, Broomielaw, Newton Street (under the Kingston Bridge), North Street, Pitt Street and the National Cycle Network (NCN) Route 75 along the River Clyde.
