Govanhill in Glasgow named one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods

Govanhill has been named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world in the latest global ranking from Time Out.

The Glasgow southside neighbourhood has been placed fifth in the international magazine’s list of the 40 Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World for 2026.

Govanhill is the highest-ranked neighbourhood in the UK and the second highest in Europe, behind Neos Kosmos in Athens.

It finished ahead of neighbourhoods in cities including Tokyo, New York, Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, Paris and Amsterdam.

Time Out’s annual list is compiled using its global network of local writers and editors, with neighbourhoods assessed on factors including food and drink, nightlife, independent businesses, liveability and community.

The publication highlighted Govanhill’s growing creative scene, cultural diversity and independent businesses, as well as the new generation of artists and writers choosing to live and work in the area.

It singled out Glasgow Zine Library and queer bookshop Category is Books, along with Adrian’s Bar, Burning House Books and popular food and drink venues including Errol’s Hot Pizza, The Bell Jar and The Rose Reilly.

Victoria Road was also praised for the mix of businesses. Time Out said the neighbourhood had developed a new creative energy.

Writer Annie McNamee for Time Out UK said: “Gen Z are migrating from West End bars and brunch spots to trendy new spots in Govanhill, injecting this once-overlooked sandstone suburb with quirkiness and energy.

“Thankfully the area, which has been Glasgow’s most diverse for a century, hasn’t lost its background amongst all the hype. On Victoria Road alone, you’ll still find Irish pubs, Pakistani and Indian restaurants, and even a Transylvanian shop. This welcoming ethos is Glasgow at its best.”

Queen’s Park, which borders the neighbourhood, was recommended for its panoramic views across the city, while the annual Govanhill International Festival and Carnival was highlighted as one of the best times to visit.

The festival takes place each summer with a programme of exhibitions, talks, films, music, community events and a parade.

Govanhill continues a strong run for Glasgow neighbourhoods in Time Out’s global rankings.

Strathbungo was ranked 22nd in the world in 2024, following previous appearances for Glasgow’s West End and Shawlands. Dennistoun was placed eighth in the world in 2020.

Govanhill’s fifth-place finish is the highest position achieved by a Glasgow neighbourhood in the annual ranking.

The 2026 list was topped by Jongno 3-ga in Seoul, followed by L’Ocean District in Rabat, Neos Kosmos in Athens and Chinatown in Los Angeles.

Time Out selected 40 neighbourhoods across 26 countries and territories for this year’s ranking.
