The Highland Wildlife Park has welcomed the birth of a baby vicuna for the second time this year.
The month-old male has been named Apu, meaning “a god of the mountains” in the Quechua language of the Andes.
Apu was born on Tuesday, September 1, to parents Lino and Ozzy. Keepers at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) say the youngster is doing well and settling in with the rest of the herd.
The birth was captured on camera by the park’s hoofstock keepers.
A baby vicuna is known as a cria. The young animals are born precocial, meaning they can stand and walk within an hour of birth.
Visitors to Highland Wildlife Park, near Kingussie, will be able to spot Apu exploring the drive-through reserve, with his mum close by.
The arrival marks the second vicuna birth at the park this year.
