Huge replica of 17th Century Spanish galleon sails into Ayr Harbour
Hundreds watched in awe along the Ayrshire coastline as a massive replica of a 17th Century Spanish galleon sailed into Ayr Harbour last night. The tall ship Galeón Andalucía arrived at around 7pm on Monday, August 10 and was a spectacular sight to behold. The vessel will welcome visitors aboard from Thursday, August 13 to Sunday, August 23, with the ship open to visitors from 10am to 8pm each day to learn about maritime heritage at the exhibition onboard. There will also be a showcase of period-accurate elements including food, sleeping arrangements, navigational tools, cannon handling tools, and more. The Galeón Andalucía is a replica of the type of vessel used by the Spanish Crown for maritime expeditions of discovery, and to establish trade routes between Spain, America, and the Philippine Islands - designed to cross the largest oceans as efficiently as possible. This fantastic exhibition is brought to Ayr by the Nao Victoria Foundation, a Spanish not-for-profit organisation that operates replicas of historical ships as sailing museums and is supported by South Ayrshire Council and Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Port of Ayr. María Esteban Castrillo, communications manager for the Galeón Andalucía, said: “Sailing the Galeón Andalucía to Ayr is a truly epic event. We are talking about an imposing replica of the legendary vessels that accomplished the feat of connecting continents: the Spanish galleons that dominated the longest maritime routes in history. “This very ship, which we are now bringing to the public, is a living legend that has already sailed the great oceans of the planet. Seeing its historic masts rise against the spectacular backdrop of the Firth of Clyde and the rugged Scottish coastline will be an unforgettable sight; it is a unique and monumental opportunity for visitors to have the privilege of stepping onto the very decks that, for over three centuries, linked our world forever”. Councillor Alec Clark, South Ayrshire Council’s Depute Leader and Policy Lead for Commercial/Operational Services, said: “It’s fantastic that this unique vessel is coming to Ayr this summer, and I’m sure visitors from Ayr, around Scotland, and tourists to the area will be blown away by its scale and detail.
