Plans to make the temporary footway improvements on South Street in St Andrews permanent are progressing, with the appointment of contractor T&N Gilmartin.
The project forms part of the council’s ongoing investment in active travel and public realm improvements within St Andrews town centre.
The preferred design was developed following public consultation and will include five new build-out areas, four additional disabled parking spaces, a new zebra crossing, cycle parking, seating, tree planting and improved public spaces along South Street.
Work is expected to be carried out in four phases between October 2026 and June 2027. Phase one will involve work between West Port Gate and Bell Street from 12 October 2026 to 27 November 2026.
During construction, localised give-and-take traffic management and temporary parking restrictions will be required at individual work locations. Pedestrian access to properties will be maintained throughout the programme, and arrangements will be made to accommodate deliveries where required.
The programme avoids key holiday periods with no construction work taking place from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 and 26 March 2027 to 9 April 2027.

With St Andrews continuing to welcome visitors from around the world, including during major events such as The Open, it’s important that we invest in streets and public spaces that are accessible, attractive and fit for the future.”
