The Scottish Event Campus (SEC) has today welcomed the announcement that the UK Government has confirmed it will commit £6 million in funding support for the campus’ ambitious expansion plans, Destination SEC.

The Chancellor of the Exhequer, confirmed the UK Government’s support of Scotland’s national events campus when setting out his Autumn Budget. The £6 million will be used to support the delivery of the first phase of Destination SEC which will enhance and transform the campus.

Comprising the OVO Hydro, SEC Armadillo and the SEC Centre, the 64-acre riverside campus in Glasgow is a regional and national asset that drives wider economic, social and cultural prosperity.

Destination SEC is designed to retain and enhance the SEC’s and Scotland’s position as a leading international venue for live entertainment, conferences and exhibitions for decades to come.

Phase one of Destination SEC will focus on the redevelopment of the car park situated in front of the OVO Hydro. At a similar size to Glasgow’s George Square, the East Plaza and activation zone will provide Scotland with a new outdoor events space and enhanced civic location.

Since the initial plans were unveiled in September, Destination SEC has received widespread support including endorsement from Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government and other key stakeholders across the country.

Dom McKay, CEO of the SEC, said: “This is extremely welcome news and a further endorsement from the UK Government of the vital role the SEC plays in underpinning Glasgow’s and Scotland’s position as a global events and conference destination. Today, the SEC generates more than £605m in economic value, welcomes 2.5 million visitors annually and supports 5,300 jobs.

“This welcome support along with our wider Campus development plans will allow us to not only significantly enhance our economic and social contribution but also secure the SEC’s and Scotland’s position as a leading international venue for live entertainment, conferences, and exhibitions for decades to come.

“The UK Government’s £6 million funding will help deliver the first phase of our plans to develop our Campus for the next generation.”

Welcoming the announcement Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander said: “Glasgow built the stage for COP26 and the Commonwealth Games, and this investment will help build the next one.

“By backing the SEC’s ambitious expansion plans with a £6 million commitment, the UK Government is helping to boost Scotland’s economy, create jobs, show the world Scotland means business, and ensure Glasgow remains a leading global events city.”

The SEC first opened its doors in 1985, and its subsequent development and expansion has been a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the River Clyde and neighbouring communities. It has had a truly transformative effect on Glasgow, the wider city region and Scotland.
