Thousands of people are being invited to take part in what organisers hope will become the UK’s largest community yoga class in Glasgow.

Beatson Cancer Charity will bring up to 3,000 participants together at the SEC on 13 September for its new Yellow Yogis fundraising event.

The large-scale yoga session will be led by internationally recognised instructor Finlay Wilson, better known as The Kilted Yogi, and hosted by television and radio presenter Jenny Powell.

Organisers hope the event will raise £250,000 for the charity’s Wellbeing Centre at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

The class has been designed for people of every ability, including complete beginners who have never previously tried yoga.

Participants will take part in warm-ups, challenges and a guided yoga session before the event concludes with a moment of stillness and gratitude.

Different sections of the venue will be supported by figures from sport, comedy, entertainment and wellness, with special guests due to be announced.

Finlay Wilson said: “My mission is to break down barriers to starting or attending yoga sessions.

“Whether it is by offering variations for all abilities, supporting different financial realities, or simply by cracking a joke when the going gets tough, I aim to create a space where everyone will get something out of the class and move in a way they haven’t moved before.”

Wilson, a senior Yoga Alliance teacher and author, has developed an international following through his accessible approach to yoga.

Jenny Powell will guide participants through the programme. The presenter first became widely known through the television show No Limits and has since appeared on programmes including Wheel of Fortune, Celebrity MasterChef, Come Dine With Me and Loose Women.

Yellow Yogis was created by Beatson Cancer Charity business ambassador Mike Smith, who said the idea began around 18 months ago.

He said: “I wanted to create something that could make a genuinely big difference, and the vision was simple: bring people together for one of the largest indoor yoga sessions in the UK.

“Once we began sharing the idea, everything came together. Of course, I have to say thanks for the incredible support of all our sponsors and the team at Beatson too.”

Money raised will directly support the Beatson Cancer Charity Wellbeing Centre, a calming space away from the hospital’s wards and clinics.

Patients and their families can use its lounges, meet other people, take part in activities and receive support while undergoing treatment.

The charity says its wellbeing services can help reduce anxiety and pain while improving patients’ confidence and emotional and physical health.

Yellow Yogis will take place at the SEC Glasgow from approximately 10am until 2pm on Sunday, 13 September.

Entry costs £35 and includes a yellow yoga mat and goody bag. Participants are encouraged to raise around £150 each where possible.

Anyone unable to attend can also donate separately to the fundraising campaign. Places can be booked through the Yellow Yogis website
