Motorists travelling between Edinburgh and Fife are being warned of three weeks of overnight disruption as a major programme of roadworks gets underway tonight.

Sections of the M90, A90 and A9000 around Queensferry will be closed at various points between Monday 5 October and Wednesday 28 October.

BEAR Scotland is carrying out the work on behalf of Transport Scotland, with road markings and reflective studs being replaced alongside drainage improvements.

The work covers routes between the M9/M90 Spur Junction 1A and M90 Junction 1B at Ferrytoll, as well as sections of the A90.

The first closures will begin at 8pm tonight and continue until 6am each morning from 5 to 9 October.

During this phase, the M9 Junction 1A Spur to M90 Junction 1A at Queensferry will be closed.

Drivers travelling westbound on the M9 towards the M90 northbound will be diverted via M9 Junction 3, M9 Junction 2, the B8046 and A904 before returning to the motorway at Queensferry.

Eastbound M9 traffic heading for the M90 northbound will leave at Junction 2 and use the B8046 and A904.

A90 northbound traffic will instead be directed through the A90 bus lane, B800 and A904 before rejoining the M90.

Further closures will follow throughout October.

From 12 to 14 October, the M90 northbound between Junction 1A Queensferry and Junction 1B Ferrytoll will close between 10pm and 6am.

Traffic will leave the motorway at Queensferry and cross via the A904 and A9000 before returning to the M90 at Ferrytoll.

On the night of 15 October, the A90 between Dalmeny and M90 Junction 1 at Scotstoun will be affected between 8pm and 6am.

Motorway traffic will be diverted through the A902 Maybury, A8 Glasgow Road and M9, while a separate route will operate for vehicles unable to use the motorway.

The closures will then move to the southbound M90 between Ferrytoll and Queensferry from 20 to 22 October.

Between 10pm and 6am, drivers will leave at Junction 1B and travel via the A9000 and A904 before rejoining the motorway at Junction 1A.

The final phase is scheduled for 27 and 28 October, when sections around the A9000 at Echline Junction and the A90 between Scotstoun and Dalmeny will close between 8pm and 6am.

Motorway traffic heading towards the A90 will be sent via the M90, M9, A8 Glasgow Road and A902 Maybury before returning to the A90.

BEAR Scotland said the overnight scheduling was intended to reduce disruption on routes used by thousands of commuters travelling between Edinburgh and Fife.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These improvements to road markings, reflective studs and drainage on the M90 and A90 will enhance safety for road users.

“It is essential for safety that we close sections of the carriageway while these works are carried out. We have scheduled the closures overnight to minimise disruption as much as possible.

“We thank road users in advance for their patience and understanding.”

All of the works are weather dependent and could be postponed or cancelled if conditions are unsuitable.
