Tony Macaroni has confirmed its East Kilbride restaurant has closed its doors after the shutters were pulled down earlier this year.

The St James Court eatery closed unexpectedly while its Express branch in The Hub EK continues to operate, along with 12 more locations across Scotland.

Tony Macaroni and its main parent company Viva Italia Ltd are facing a period of financial distress, including provisional liquidator appointments and multiple legal challenges over unpaid debts.

Edinburgh’s Court of Session appointed a provisional liquidator for founder Guiseppe ‘Sep’ Marini’s primary company, Viva Italia Ltd, to protect assets.

Marini is still listed as an active director of Viva Italia, the hospitality group Tony Macaroni belongs to, on Companies House.

Confirming the closure in a post on social media, Tony Macaroni said: “Our St James Court restaurant has now closed its doors. To everyone who celebrated birthdays, christenings, first dates and Friday nights with us there over the years: THANK YOU. We loved every one of them.

“The good news? Tony Macaroni isn’t going anywhere. Our restaurant at The Hub (Unit C8) is now serving all our menus and offers.”

Launched as a quick-service format during the Covid pandemic, the Express concept was designed for guests who want the flavour of Tony Macaroni in a faster, more flexible way.

East Kilbride holds a place in history of the Scottish Italian restaurant brand as the first standalone Tony Macaroni restaurant opened in the town in October 2007.
