Three baby capybaras have been born at Edinburgh Zoo, with keepers welcoming the new arrivals following their overnight birth.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) confirmed the pups were spotted on October 28, born to parents Luna and Rodney.

The youngsters are doing well and are currently staying close to their mum. Keepers plan to carry out their first health check in the coming weeks, when their genders will be confirmed and names chosen.

Capybaras are the world’s largest rodents and can breed several times a year.

The latest arrivals follow the birth of Bru in May, who became an internet sensation and was the first capybara to be born in Scotland in 18 years.

Darren McGarry, head of animal care at Edinburgh Zoo, said the triplets were “adorable”, adding that it was wonderful to watch them explore their new home while staying close to their mother.

Bru, who had previously been the centre of attention, is adjusting to the arrival of his new siblings.

McGarry said: “Bru is adjusting to no longer being the centre of attention. He is a little grumpy for now but we are sure he will be best buds with his siblings once he settles.”

The birth comes after the zoo’s capybaras attracted attention on social media, following a photograph of two animals in the pool that went viral.

The zoo later revealed the scene involved Rodney and Cali, the sister of Luna.

McGarry joked that the capybaras’ lives were “like something from a soap opera”, describing Cali as the one who “rules the roost” and Rodney as a shy character who is “clearly a hit with the ladies”.
